PERIODONTAL DISEASES

Periodontal diseases are a group of diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) wich affects the tooth- supporting tissues (gum and bone).

 

Periodontal disease is a serious chronic inflammatory disease, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. It can affect one tooth or many teeth. Inflammation is mainly caused by bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on teeth, but other factors affect the health of your gums :

 

  • Age

  • Smoking / tobacco use

  • Genetics

  • Hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy,menopause)

  • Stress

  • Medication

  • Systematic diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis…)

  • Poor nutrition and obesity

 

Untreated periodontal disease can increase inflammation in the body, which may increase the risk for development of more severe health complications, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases…
